Tooth Extractions are one of the most common dental procedures performed. Although there are numerous ways and methods of treating an infected or damaged tooth, sometimes an extraction is the best treatment option. Tooth extractions may be needed for various reasons and may be recommended by the dentist as the most suitable option!

Severe tooth decay or damage:

If a tooth is severely decayed and affects the tooth pulp beyond repair via Root Canal Therapy, the best option might be extraction! Getting rid of the severely infected teeth will prevent the infection from spreading.

Periodontal disease:

Severe gum infection or Periodontal disease affects the tissue and bones around the teeth and may cause loosening of the teeth. An extraction will be the best option.

Wisdom tooth:

Wisdom teeth can sometimes emerge at an angle or may not have enough space to emerge. This is called Impaction and can sometimes cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Your dentist can suggest if a wisdom tooth extraction is required.

Orthodontic treatment:

Dentists may need to extract teeth as part of preparation for Orthodontics which aims at aligning all the teeth. Overcrowding of teeth can also require extractions.

X-rays will be used to determine the position of the teeth and to plan the extraction procedure. Anaesthetic injections will be used to numb the area around the teeth to minimise the pain. The tooth is then slowly rocked back and forth until it breaks free from the gum tissue. In some complex cases, it may have to be broken into smaller pieces to be removed.
